Applications are now open for the Master of Fine Arts in Visual Art program at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The MFA in Visual Art program, chaired by artist Tiffany Calvert, is an inclusive, close-knit community of renegade makers and thinkers. It instills students with the agency and resiliency essential for this generation of artists.
The curriculum professionally prepares students for a diversified approach to the field of contemporary art that nurtures sustained, lifelong engagement while recognizing multiple pathways and definitions for a career in the arts and culture sector. Students also have opportunities to engage with the city of St. Louis, which serves as both an extension of the studio and a site of activation for art and artists.
This interdisciplinary program offers students a home for rigorous inquiry, intellectual generosity, and professional preparedness. As part of a tier-one research institution, the Sam Fox School unites art, architecture, and design with its renowned Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum to bring an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary issues and challenges. Expansive, high-tech facilities and studios serve as a think tank for intellectual and material experimentation across disciplines.
There are numerous options to expand studies through the Office for Socially Engaged Practice, including opportunities like the Counterpublic triennial fellowship and the Berlin Sommerakademie study abroad program. Throughout the two-year MFA in Visual Art program, students mount several exhibitions, including a thesis exhibition at the Kemper Art Museum.
