In response to rising rates of diabetes-related eye disease, Vision Center South has introduced a dedicated diabetic retinopathy prevention program. The initiative includes early detection screenings, nutritional guidance, and referral coordination—all available at its Dothan, Enterprise, Wetumpka, and Marianna clinics.
Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. Vision Center South’s new model ensures that every diabetic patient receives annual retinal imaging and risk assessments through Vision Center South‘s expanded OCT and fundus photography systems.
“Many patients with diabetes don’t realize they’re at risk until symptoms emerge,” said Dr. Carla Hendrix of Denney Vision in Dothan. “Our program aims to shift from reaction to prevention.”
The program includes close coordination with primary care providers and endocrinologists throughout southeast Alabama and northwest Florida. At the Enterprise and Wetumpka locations, patients also receive personalized care plans outlining lifestyle and medication considerations.
Patients with limited mobility are offered remote monitoring and transportation assistance, especially at the eye doctor Marianna FL location. Community workshops and support groups are being launched to supplement clinical services.
This new initiative is part of Vision Center South’s broader strategy to close care gaps and improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
