Fighting glycation from within: The science behind skinbetter science’s latest launch

Glycation, a biochemical process that accelerates skin aging, is gaining increased attention in dermatology and aesthetic medicine. While environmental factors such as UV radiation, pollution, and blue light are widely recognized as contributors to aging, glycation remains an underappreciated but significant cause of visible skin deterioration.

A natural process worsened by poor diet, environmental factors, and aging, glycation “involves sugars binding to proteins, like collagen and elastin, and forming harmful substances called Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs)” which stiffen proteins, Dr. Vivian Bucay of the Bucay Center for Dermatology & Aesthetics told CosmeticsDesign.

This results in visible signs of aging that compromise the skin’s youthful appearance, such as dullness, uneven texture, and redness, she said.

Glycated collagen accumulates at an estimated rate of 3.7% per year, making intervention an appealing option to beauty-from-within consumers, she added.

BioRewind & glycation management

Research and clinical findings

Further data on BioRewind’s efficacy will be featured in the March issue of the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. Dr. Bucay highlighted key takeaways from the research, particularly the 12-week clinical study results.

“There are several details worth noting, but the most impactful were 12-week findings that showed a 17% improvement in global skin quality compared to baseline measurements, as well as significant improvements in rough texture and dullness,” she illustrated.

As research into glycation and its effects on skin health continues, the role of ingestible solutions like BioRewind will likely expand, offering new opportunities for skin care professionals and manufacturers alike.
